Leaking roof – The changing weather has made a few folks realize that their houses aren’t perfect. Is it perhaps your house that is leaking and needs repair? Is the damage bad or just bareable? Even so do you go and gather materials to fix your roof or help others with thiers?
Cerci put her hands on her hips and hummed to herself looking at her packed gear for the day. She had signed up for a few small quests to help around town today. She went out and worked on gathering her party. First, she went to Salis’s home and knocked on the door. He seemed relaxed and ready for her this time. Rats. It was much more fun to drag him out of bed like a troublesome little brother. He already had Tea stepping. Next time she would come sooner. “So.” she plopped her bag down near his simple little wooden table. “We have three houses in town that state they have leaking roofs and quests were put in at the guild for repair work. Ready to head out. “The other kitsu gave her a steady look. “Re’curra will still be sleeping and if you wake her up again, she threatened to drown you at pugfish point. Drink your tea.” He gestured to the table she was already settling down at. “Re’curra also says you’ve been dodging dating.” He made a noise to her comment and sat down to drink his own tea while they killed a bit of time before going to pick up the third member of their party for the day. Cerci picked this group of friends and did a few quests with them from time to time to make some silver from her regular quests out in the outskirts. It kept her as a friendly adventuring face in town as well as gave her a safe day in town as the town quests often were cleaning or repair work. Finding a lost pet the smaller things she didn’t really mind. And with the nippy air it was going to be winter before she knew it so making sure the town was in good repair before then would make winter easier. The morning teatime passed with Cerci harassing Salis about needing to get out more and stop being such a homebody and sign up to be an adventuring kitsu proper or a farmer or something to have a steadier income instead of add in help and Salis reminding her he wasn’t much of a fighter and was far more interested in history and myths and education. Cerci just had to roll her eyes about all that and finally suggested he try and work at the guild as a desk worker handing out quests or helping educate other ktisu on things and that made him think. He seemed pleased with that idea. It was an important job in her mind as learning from the guild from an experienced adventuring kitus or from the guild knowledge keepers made a new adventuring kitsu safer and Salis had a good head for where things where stored and kept so he could likely be good at all that filing and pulling out information. Soon enough the tea was finished, and it was time to head and pick up Re’curra. They arrived in time to see one of Re’curra’s ‘friends’ leaving. Honestly that Jellicle was on overly friendly terms with several others in town and she would take turns snuggling up and spending a night with different kitsu nightly. She smiled at the pair and yawned waving them in while she finished getting ready. The house smelled of strangers and incense, making both Cerci and Salis keep by the door while waiting. They knew Re’curra wasn’t the kind to mix magic carelessly but that didn’t mean she wouldn’t be found kissing some of her close ‘friends’ often. Neither Salis nor Cerci were that kind of friend thankfully or it might make picking Re’curra up for quests a bit awkward. Still it seemed only one stranger had slept over, and it was a short time later when Re’curra came out with her hair twisted up and tied out the way into a large bun. With that they headed out. Re’curra carried a small bucket and a ladder that Salie helped her with while Cerci had her bag. The first house was an empty one that a welcoming committee member had been cleaning but noticed a leak in. Some homes had stone shingles carved and set on. Some had thatched rooves and some were a mix of tar and sticks with shingled over the top. This one was an easier fix with a set of cracked tiles and a few smaller leaks. Re’curra started a small fire in the kitchen area in the home and put a small amount of the contents of her bucket into a pan from Cerci’s bag. It was a mix of pine saps, stones, clay and shells that had been grinded down and mixed. That smelled wretched when heated but when it cooled made a water-resistant layer that helped seal roofs. Cerci scouted out the leak from on top of the roof floating while Salis looked inside and helped Cerci narrow down by tapping with a broom that was in the home on the undeside of the roof to narrow down where the leaks were at. Cerci then worked on gently lifting and removing several tiles that she carried down and set in a pile. They could be ground down and recycled. The guild had already dropped off a few new ones wrapped in cloth by the front door. The welcoming committee did a decent job when they wanted to. Cerci collected the new tiles and brought them up and slid them into place under the old tile then Re’curra would float up and bring the pitch mix to seal the tile in place by sliding it out and putting in pitch and putting it back once the fit was confirmed and they didn’t have to adjust the tile to be put in. The windows had to be left open and Re’curra would use her magic to help air the place out, as would Cerci when they were done. Salis hadn’t really studied up on his magic so he wasn’t much help with that part, but he could keep the pitch stirring so it didn’t burn and bring them things as needed from the bag and make sure things stayed tidy. The first house didn’t take too long with three of them working on it. Salis had drawn buckets of water and after the pitch had time to settle they tested it and made sure they didn’t need to keep working. Once it was confirmed no more leaks they moved onto the next house. There was an elderly kitsu who lived there who spent much of the time yelling at them how do their job until Salis made a comment on how lovely their tea collection was and the poor fool was taken away while Re’curra and Cerci got the real work done. The process was much the same as the first house except they had to have the fire outside as the older home owner was not going to let them “stink up’ her house. Cerci found Salis’s sacrifice perfectly acceptable but Re’curra felt bad for him so when they did finish and check the job they did remember to collect him for the last house. That was when they found out it hadn’t been maintained for the last few years. There was rot on the beam boards and it was clear this couldn’t just be a simple patch and clean up job. Re’curra swore a blue streak under her breath while she worked on stripping off the broken tiles and Salis had to go get a lumber worker to do an evaluation. It was clear this would have to reported to the guild and have to be revaluated for a higher cost. The home owner here was upset by this and threatened to give them a bad review and lodge a complaint with the guild along with several forms of bodily harm. Cerci smiled at them “Oh please do. Because we are mandatory reporters and your quest repair exceeds the scope of the basic quest you told the guild. I’m sure the guild will have to be very careful and likely have to send out an evaluator for EVERY quest you do if you have such a difficult time with adventuring kitsu and of course that will likely spread back to the crafting community as well.” She gave a lazy gesture to the lumbering kitsu who had been yelled at and threatened just as much they had while he was saying they would have to basically remove a large section of the roof and replace several of the structural beams that were now unsafe. The home owner seemed to want to say something but grumbled and spat out insults in a low tone after that. It was annoying that they could only turn in two house repair quests and then had to fill out an incident report as to why they couldn’t finish the third. Still working with the lumber kitsu at least they would have a independent varication from a professional who would see to it that no part time adventuring kitsu screwed the place up trying to fix it when it needed a professional’s touch. Not every quest was a success and that hurt the silver in their pockets but they had to be safe. For now they had to tarp off the section that had removed tiles and then head back to the guild and report the issues. They had to lay cloth down, wood and pitch over the top to make the temporary seal which would have to be replaced soon and wouldn’t last the winter without proper repair. The trio had to go back to the guild and work on the hardest task of the night. Paperwork. Thankfully for Cerci both Re’curra and Salis were skilled in that aspect which made her life so much easier.
